Empowering Innovators: Patent Strategy Seminar by Department of Mechanical Engineering & KICS
The Department of Mechanical, Mechatronics, and Manufacturing Engineering at the University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Lahore, New Campus, in collaboration with the Al-Khwarizmi Institute of Computer Science (KICS), hosted an online seminar under the IP Sharing Project, in partnership with the Korea Innovation Promotion Agency (KIPA) on 28.10.2028.
Titled “From Innovation to Patent: A Complete Guide for Academic Researchers”, the seminar was part of the 2nd-Year Patent Strategy Seminar under the 2025 IP Sharing Project. It aimed to provide valuable insights into the patenting process and its role in advancing academic research and commercialization.

Presented by Mr. Baek, the seminar covered two main sessions: Patent Consulting Materials (Session 1) and Patent Utilization (Session 2). Key topics included the distinction between patents and know-how, patentability requirements (novelty, inventive step, industrial applicability), preparations before filing a patent, and the filing and examination procedures. The seminar also presented outcomes from the 2nd-year patent consulting, offering insights into ongoing work.
Dr. Muhammad Farhan (PI) and Dr. Adnan Qamar (Co-PI) organized a roundtable session with more than 30 faculty members and research students from the Mechanical Engineering Department at UET Lahore’s New Campus. The session concluded with thanks to the seminar hosts from South Korea—HWANG SunYoung (KIPA), Prof. Younjea Kim (SKKU), and Mr. Baek.
The seminar provided an enriching experience for attendees, helping them navigate the patenting process and fostering innovation in research. The IP Sharing Project continues to promote academic collaboration, connecting UET Lahore with global experts and enhancing the commercialization potential of research.

UET Lahore Hosts Civil Services Academy Probationary Officers for Two-Day Attachment Program
The University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Lahore hosted a two-day attachment program for the probationary officers of the 53rd Common Training Program (CTP) from the Civil Services Academy (CSA), Government of Pakistan. The program, scheduled for October 27–28, 2025, aims to strengthen collaboration between Pakistan’s premier engineering education institution and the country’s future civil service leadership.

During the visit, the probationary officers received briefings and tours of some of UET’s leading research and innovation centers. The agenda included a visit to the Nano and Laser Center and a briefing at the Resolve Center established by SUPARCO on Monday, October 27. The following day, Tuesday, October 28, the delegation visited the Al-Khawarizmi Institute of Computer Science (KICS), the Business and Technology Incubation Center (B&TIC), and the Main Library.
This initiative reflects UET Lahore’s continued commitment to fostering knowledge exchange between academia, research institutions, and public sector organizations. It provided the probationary officers with valuable insights into Pakistan’s advancements in science, technology, and innovation, while also highlighting UET’s role in national development.

ITU Incubator Startup Printable.pk Wins Merit Award at P@SHA ICT Awards 2023
Congratulations to our Incubator startup Hamid Saeed on recognition of his project Printable.pk and clinching the Merit Award for the most contested Consumer category at the 21st annual P@SHA awards 2023.
P@SHA (Pakistan all Software House Association) conducts annual awards to recognize and appreciate Tech Heroes in Pakistan. This year P@SHA 2023 Awards were held in Karachi, co-chaired by Federal IT Minister and former Vice Chancellor of ITU Dr. Umar Saif, Chairman P@SHA, PSEB, PITB and others.

Director KICS Dr. Waqar Mahmood Retires – Farewell Ceremony Held to Honor His Services
The University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Lahore hosted a dignified farewell ceremony today to honor the retirement of Dr. Waqar Mahmood, Director KICS of the university. The event was attended by Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Shahid Munir, Registrar Mr. Muhammad Asif, Public Relations Officer Dr. Tanveer Qasim, Deans of various faculties, and university faculty & staff. During the ceremony, the participants paid tribute to Dr. Waqar Mahmood for his dedicated service, unwavering honesty, and tireless efforts throughout his tenure.
They praised his significant contributions to the university and expressed best wishes for his future endeavors. Many also fondly recalled their cherished memories with him. Speaking on the occasion, Vice Chancellor Dr. Shahid Munir stated, “Dr. Waqar’s contributions mark a bright chapter in UET’s progress. His professional conduct and commitment will continue to serve as an inspiration for future officers.” In his farewell address, Dr. Waqar reflected on his time at UET, shared memories, and extended his best wishes for the continued growth of the institution and the prosperity of the country. The ceremony concluded with the Vice Chancellor presenting a commemorative shield to him in recognition of his valuable services.

Industry Expert Talk: Unlocking Global Opportunities in Cloud and Data Engineering
On August 4, 2025, the KICS Department at UET Lahore proudly hosted a distinguished session featuring Mr. Farhan Chaudhry, a Senior Data Engineer, BI Specialist, and Cognos Administrator currently based in Yorktown Heights, New York, United States. This insightful event was organized as part of the Huawei HCCDA cloud training program, attracting numerous enthusiastic students eager to learn from Mr. Farhan’s extensive experience and inspiring career journey. The session commenced with a warm welcome by Mr. Kashif Bashir, Senior Manager of Training, who introduced Mr. Farhan and highlighted the value of industry-academia collaboration in equipping students with real-world insights. Mr. Farhan shared his impressive professional story, which spans over two decades, beginning with his foundational years as a Software Engineer at the University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore, and culminating in senior roles at prestigious organizations such as IBM, Cognizant, and currently Share-ify in the United States.
During his presentation, Mr. Farhan emphasized the importance of continuous learning, adaptability, and technical excellence in advancing one’s career. He narrated his transition from Pakistan to the U.S. job market, detailing the challenges he overcame and the strategies he employed to secure positions in leading multinational companies. His journey reflected a blend of strong technical skills, including expertise in data engineering, business intelligence, and full-stack development, alongside effective communication and problem-solving abilities. The interactive session sparked great curiosity among the students, who actively engaged by asking numerous questions about how to secure jobs abroad, especially in the competitive U.S. market, and how to navigate visa processes such as the H1 and L1 visas. Mr. Farhan provided practical advice on building a compelling resume, networking effectively, and the significance of certifications like Huawei HCCDA in enhancing one’s employability.
He also highlighted soft skills such as teamwork, perseverance, and cultural adaptability, which are crucial for long-term success in international work environments. The candid discussion addressed students’ concerns and offered them actionable guidance on how to prepare themselves for the rigorous demands of overseas employment. Mr. Farhan encouraged students to remain proactive, embrace challenges, and maintain a growth mindset throughout their professional journey.
At the conclusion of the event, Mr. Kashif Bashir expressed sincere gratitude to Mr. Farhan for generously dedicating his time and sharing invaluable insights that will undoubtedly inspire and motivate the next generation of IT professionals. As a token of appreciation, Mr. Farhan was presented with a savinour and a lapel pin, symbolizing the department’s respect and admiration for his contributions. The event concluded with a group photograph taken outside the KICS department, capturing the enthusiasm and positive spirit shared between the expert and the students.
This engagement was an excellent example of bridging academic learning with industry expertise, providing students with a clearer understanding of the pathways to global career opportunities. Sessions like this reinforce the importance of practical knowledge, industry certifications, and mentorship in preparing graduates for the evolving IT landscape. The collaborative efforts of KICS and Huawei in organizing such events demonstrate their commitment to empowering students with the skills, confidence, and motivation required to excel in today’s competitive world.

Visit of Maj. General Dr. Ghulam Qamar, Director General DGRE to KICS UET Lahore
On the 4th of August 2025, KICS UET Lahore had the honor of hosting Maj. General (R) Dr. Ghulam Qamar, Director General of DGRE, who visited the institute in connection with the ongoing government-funded project aimed at “Skilling the Youth of Madrassas.” This initiative, supported by the Government of Pakistan through NAVTTC, currently facilitates the education and skills development of 19 madrassa students enrolled at KICS UET Lahore.
The visit commenced with a warm and respectful reception of Maj. General (R) Dr. Ghulam Qamar by the Senior Manager Trainings Mr. Kashif Bashir, Ms. Nida, Ms Akfa, highlighting the strong collaboration between the institute and government bodies. The guest was welcomed with a bouquet of flowers as a token of respect and appreciation. The atmosphere reflected a spirit of mutual commitment toward empowering youth through education and skills training.
Maj. General (R) Dr. Ghulam Qamar proceeded to observe an ongoing class where the madrassa students are receiving technical training. Demonstrating great interest and support, he sat at the back of the classroom and attentively monitored the teaching session. This hands-on observation enabled him to appreciate firsthand the quality of education and the dedication of both instructors and students involved in the program.
During the visit, the students took the opportunity to present their work and progress made throughout the course. Their presentations underscored the practical skills they have acquired, which complement their traditional religious education. Moreover, the students expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to learn new skills and requested that NAVTTC consider distributing laptops to further support their studies. This suggestion reflects the students’ eagerness to embrace technology and enhance their learning experience.
Maj. General (R) Dr. Ghulam Qamar addressed the students directly, emphasizing the vision behind this program. He articulated the importance of equipping madrassa students with additional vocational skills alongside their religious education. This dual approach aims to open pathways for sustainable income generation and career development, ensuring these young individuals can contribute meaningfully to society. He further mentioned that the government is planning to expand similar initiatives in the future to benefit a broader segment of youth from diverse backgrounds.
In recognition of Maj. General (R) Dr. Ghulam Qamar’s valuable contribution and leadership in promoting skills development among madrassa youth, Prof. Dr. Waqar Mahmood, Director of KICS, presented him with a token of appreciation. The plaque symbolized gratitude for his commitment and dedication to the cause of youth empowerment through education.
The visit concluded on a positive note, reaffirming the collaborative spirit between DGRE, NAVTTC, and KICS UET Lahore. It also served as a motivational milestone for all stakeholders involved, inspiring continued efforts toward inclusive education and skill-building for underprivileged youth.
