Empowering Innovators: Patent Strategy Seminar by Department of Mechanical Engineering & KICS

The Department of Mechanical, Mechatronics, and Manufacturing Engineering at the University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Lahore, New Campus, in collaboration with the Al-Khwarizmi Institute of Computer Science (KICS), hosted an online seminar under the IP Sharing Project, in partnership with the Korea Innovation Promotion Agency (KIPA) on 28.10.2028.

Titled “From Innovation to Patent: A Complete Guide for Academic Researchers”, the seminar was part of the 2^nd-Year Patent Strategy Seminar under the 2025 IP Sharing Project. It aimed to provide valuable insights into the patenting process and its role in advancing academic research and commercialization.

Presented by Mr. Baek, the seminar covered two main sessions: Patent Consulting Materials (Session 1) and Patent Utilization (Session 2). Key topics included the distinction between patents and know-how, patentability requirements (novelty, inventive step, industrial applicability), preparations before filing a patent, and the filing and examination procedures. The seminar also presented outcomes from the 2nd-year patent consulting, offering insights into ongoing work.

Dr. Muhammad Farhan (PI) and Dr. Adnan Qamar (Co-PI) organized a roundtable session with more than 30 faculty members and research students from the Mechanical Engineering Department at UET Lahore’s New Campus. The session concluded with thanks to the seminar hosts from South Korea—HWANG SunYoung (KIPA), Prof. Younjea Kim (SKKU), and Mr. Baek.

The seminar provided an enriching experience for attendees, helping them navigate the patenting process and fostering innovation in research. The IP Sharing Project continues to promote academic collaboration, connecting UET Lahore with global experts and enhancing the commercialization potential of research.
