Keeping its tradition, CERAD UET successfully organizes 6th International Conference on Energy Conservation & Efficiency (ICECE) 2023 at UET Lahore.

ICECE is a flagship event of the Centre for Energy Research & Development (CERAD), UET Lahore that has been happening consistently for the last five years with the spirit of providing an opportunity and platform to the researchers, engineers, and energy experts to explore and exchange ideas in the rapidly developing domain of energy efficiency and conservation strategies. Like all previous conferences, the 6th edition was also massively successful and unique in its features inspiring researchers, academics, Industrial experts, public sector, and private organizations not only from across the country but also from around the world to witness quality research papers, invited talks, panel discussion and industrial exposition. The 2-day international conference was organized by Centre for Energy Research  Development (CERAD), University of Engineering  Technology Lahore in technically co-sponsorship by IEEE USA.

The opening ceremony of the conference was graced by the presence of Vice- Chancellor UET, Prof. Dr. Nadeem Ahmad Mufti as a Chief Guest. Chair IEEE Lahore Section, Dr. Shazib Rathore, Managing Director, Central Region, Huawei Pakistan (Pvt). Ltd, Mr. Robin / Xing Xiaobing were invited as distinguished guests whereas a special message from Chairman, Higher Education Commission Pakistan, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad was also played at the ceremony. The opening ceremony kicked off with the welcome note and a brief presentation by Director CERAD, Prof. Dr. Waqar Mahmood.

 

On the occasion, Director CERAD, Dr. Waqar Mahmood briefed about the purpose of the conference. According to him these type of conferences plays an important role in the improvement of energy storage systems in Pakistan and we can improve energy storage systems by using natural resources. Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Nadeem Ahmad Mufti expressed his determination to continue the efforts of UET to overcome the energy crisis in Pakistan. He said that “UET is quite active and working in the energy sector by collaborating with the Government on various successful projects and this conference is another giant initiative to spread awareness about the much-needed requirement of energy efficiency and conservation”.

91 research papers were submitted from various countries including Bangladesh, Russia, Italy, Japan, India, China, South Korea, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, USA, and Pakistan; 26 top quality papers were accepted by the Technical Evaluation Committee qualifying the merit-based criteria. Speakers were invited from prestigious universities of Pakistan and other countries like Australia, Malaysia, United States, China, and Saudi Arabia to deliver talks in the areas of Renewable Energy, Smart Grid, Energy Conservation, Artificial Intelligence in Energy Conservation, Energy Artificial Intelligence, Energy Conservation Resource Management, etc. A panel discussion was also held as a module of the conference themed “Industrial Academia Linkages in Energy Sector” moderated by Mr. Muhammad Ali. The distinguished panel comprised Dr. Muhammad Asim, Dr. Ehsan ul Haq, Dr. Muhammad Farooq, Mr. Irfan Aslam, and Mr. Faheem Ashraf.

 

 

An exposition was also organized where products from different research labs of CERAD and industries including Huawei, Solar Tech, Butterfly LED Lights, Fobros Technologies, Supreme Solsun Energy (Pvt). Ltd., and RADA Technologies were displayed. A students-based poster and project competition with prize money up to Rs. 100,000 was also organized where students from various institutes of the country participated.

 

The closing ceremony of the conference took place on the second day. Vice Chancellor UET, Prof. Dr. Nadeem Ahmad Mufti, Managing Director, Punjab Energy Efficiency Conservation Agency (PEECA), Mr. Abdul Rehman, Vice Chairman, Pakistan Solar Association, Mr. Faheem Ashraf, Mr. Arif Mansoor Qaisarani, Head PMU Energy Department graced the closing ceremony with their presence. Director CERAD, Dr. Waqar briefly described the 2-day event along with the recommendations made at the panel discussion. Vice Chancellor UET, Prof. Dr. Nadeem Ahmad Mufti praised Dr. Waqar and his team for conducting the 6th in its series conference successfully. He said “Considering the country energy situation, we must use our energy resources wisely, now it is time to seriously consider energy efficiency and conservation, which is undoubtedly one of the most powerful and cost-effective solutions being implemented throughout the world”. The conference ended up with the certificate distribution to the participants and organizers. The winners of the students’ competitions were also announced and given the prizes.

ICOSST 2022 loaded with participation of leading research scholars and IT entrepreneurs from the country and across the globe, comes to an end at UET Lahore.

Al-Khawarizmi Institute of Computer Science (KICS), UET, Lahore took the initiative 16 years back to organize International Conference on Open-Source Systems and Technologies (ICOSST). ICOSST is a signature event of KICS happening successfully at the institute since 2006. Like all previous conferences, the 16th edition was also massively successful and unique in its features inspiring researchers, academics, Industrial experts, public sector, and private organizations not only from across the country but also from around the world to witness quality research papers, invited talks, panel discussion and virtual exposition. The 2-day international conference was organized by Al-Khawarizmi Institute of Computer Science (KICS), University of Engineering & Technology Lahore in technically co-sponsorship by IEEE USA.

The Chairman Punjab Higher Education Commission (PHEC), Dr. Shahid Munir graced the opening ceremony of ICOSST-2022 with his presence as a Chief Guest. CTO, Punjab Safe Cities Authority, Mr. Tariq Malik, Senior Vice Chairman PASHA, Mr. Ali Ihsan, and CEO Netsole, Mr. Saleem Ghauri were invited as Distinguished Guests. The Chairman PHEC congratulated the organizers and participants of ICOSST 2022. He said,As we all know that we are living in the era of knowledge-based economy and it is a proven fact that open-source systems and technologies are going to grab more share from the knowledge-based economy and the IT industry in the future”. Addressing to the participants of opening ceremony, Senior Vice President PASHA, Mr. Ali Ihsan said “We have to work in spaces where a lot of work has not been done so open-source technology allows us to operate across the spectrum in any new tech which hasn’t established players yet” whereas CEO Netsole Technologies, Mr. Salim Ghauri said “Today, we are recognized and accepted as an IT country in the world. Now is the time to take a lead in the IT sector and for this we need to focus on producing students with skills to avail more opportunities”. Special video messages from Chairman Higher Education Commission (HEC) Pakistan, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, Chairman PM Task Force on Science & Technology, Prof. Dr. Atta ur Rehman, and Dr. Mbemba from the University of the Gambia were also played at the opening ceremony.

Collectively 66 researchers submitted their manuscripts from various countries including Pakistan, China, India, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia; only a handful top quality papers were accepted by the Technical Evaluation Committee qualifying the merit-based criteria. Speakers were invited from prestigious universities of Pakistan and other countries like Australia, China, Berlin, UK to deliver talks in the areas of Artificial Intelligence, Cyber Security, Big data & Cloud computing, Robotics, Image Classification, Cyber Security, Blockchain, and the Internet of Things (lot). A panel discussion was also held as a module of the conference themed “Catching the Web 3.0 Wave for Pakistan” moderated by Jamil Goheer, Director Kualitetum – CEC P@SHA (Brand Committee Chair).  The distinguished panel comprised Mr. Abraham, Director Marketing PEOPLE (Leading HR Management & Recruitment Company), Mr. Ahmed Muzammil, Director Mezino Technologies (Tech Industry Expert), Mr. Fakhar Khan, Director SoftPyramid (Industry Expert – Top Rated Upwork Team), and Mr. Atif Javaid, Director Aventrio (Industry – Business Development & Freelancing Expert), and Dr. Usman Ghani from UET Lahore.

Director KICS, Prof. Dr. Waqar Mahmood shared the modules of the conference with the participants and also highlighted the history of the International Conference on Open-Source Systems & Technologies at the opening ceremony. An exposition was also organized where products from different research labs of KICS were displayed. More than 20 industries came for the recruitment drive for the students. Participating industries include Cogent labs, Tekboox, Evsinc, Cure MD, Dynamics Solution and Technology, i2C, learning hub, Metadort, PASHA, Manafa, Crosshair Technology, Advance Systemes pvt. Ltd, and Xebex.

A students-based competition “BRAINIAC’22” and BRAINIAC workshops were also organized by IEEE UET Lahore in collaboration with IEEE Lahore Section and KICS where students from various institutes participated in different modules including Artificial Intelligence/ML Coding competition, Internet of Things Project Idea Competition, Logo and Branding Competition, Impact – A Startup Idea Competition with the price money of up to Rs. 100,000. 

The closing ceremony of the conference took place on the second day of the conference. Director General Pro Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDM), Mr. Faisal Fareed participated as a Chief Guest. “The difference between the developed and the developing countries is basically the difference of knowledge and technology. If we want to join the stream of developed countries, it is important for our young generation to equip themselves with the latest technology” said Director General PDM, Mr. Faisal Fareed at the closing ceremony of ICOSST 2022. Director KICS, Dr. Waqar described briefly the 2-day event along with the recommendations made at the panel discussion. Vice Chancellor UET, Prof. Dr. Syed Mansoor Sarwar praised Dr. Waqar and his team for conducting the 16th in its series conference successfully. Addressing the participants, he said “We are trying to bridge the gap between industry and academia by providing more internship opportunities to the students, by having industry professionals to teach technology-oriented courses, and by holding training sessions for the faculty so that they can work for some time in the industry”.

At the closing ceremony, an MoU was also signed between Al-Khawarizmi Institute of Computer Science (KICS), UET Lahore and Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDM) to promote technical and research collaboration. Director KICS, Prof. Dr. Waqar Mahmood, and Director General, PDM, Mr. Faisal Fareed signed the MoU. The conference ended up with the certificate distribution to the participants and organizers. The winners of the students’ competitions were also announced and given the prizes.

Attended GCCC and Globecom 2022 at Rio De Janeiro, Brazil

As Chapter Chair Mr. Kashif Bashir Chair IEEE ComSoc Lahore Chapter and Manager Trainings KICS-UET Participated in Global Chapter Chair Congress (GCCC’22). The IEEE ComSoc GCCC’22 took place at IEEE GlobeCom’22 at Windsor Barra Hotel, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from 4-5 Decembers 2022. The purpose of GCCC’22 is to facilitate and encourage sharing, feedback, and networking among Chapter Chairs, staff, and ComSoc officers. The Chapter Chairs were from the countries like USA, Australia, Japan, Brazil, Mexico, UK, France, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, China, India, Pakistan, and many others. Besides GCCC’22 meeting there was a networking dinner with the chapter chairs and a lunch with the chapter chairs and IEEE ComSoc Board of Governors as well.

 Mr. Kashif Bashir also delivered a presentation on the year 2021-22 research activities taken place in different universities of Pakistan. He especially mentioned A Summit on Artificial Intelligence in information and Communication 2021 and 2022, A Summit on Internet of Things 2022, and collaborated events like All Pakistan Congress 2022, Seasonal School on Video Surveillance and four IEEE Communication Society sponsored Internationals Conferences which includes International conference on Open-Source Systems and Technologies ICOSST 2022, International Conference on Emerging Trends in Engineering Sciences and Technology ICES&T 2022, International Conference on Emerging Trends in Electrical, Control and Telecommunication Engineering (ETECTE)” 2022 and International conference on Electrical Engineering and Sustainable Technologies 2022.

5th International Conference on Energy Conservation & Efficiency (ICECE) organized by CERAD UET Lahore

“The energy industry needs to not only adopt new technologies, business models and reduce costs but also take the clean energy agenda to the decision-making level,” says Federal Minister for Science & Technology, Shibli Faraz at the 5th ICECE 2022.

Centre for Energy Research & Development (CERAD), UET Lahore has been organizing its flagship event, International Conference on Energy Conservation & Efficiency (ICECE) consistently for the last four years. This year CERAD organized the 5th edition of the annual conference to provide the opportunity and platform to the researchers, engineers, and energy experts to explore & exchange ideas in the rapidly developing domain of energy efficiency and conservation strategies in collaboration with Punjab Energy Efficiency and Conservation Agency (PEECA), IEEE Power and Energy Society, IEEE Industry Application Society Lahore Chapter, and IEEE Lahore Section. Considering the COVID 19 impact, the conference took place virtually this year again.

The opening ceremony of the conference was graced by the presence of the Federal Minister for Science & Technology, Mr. Shibli Faraz as a Chief Guest. Governor Punjab, Ch. Muhammad Sarwar, Provincial Minister for Energy, Dr. Muhammad Akhtar Malik, Provincial Minister of Higher Education Department, Raja Yasir Humayun Sarfaraz, Chairman of PM Task Force on Science & Technology, Dr. Atta-ur-Rahman, and MD PEECA, Mr. Abdul Rehman were invited as distinguished guests. The federal Minister for Science & Technology congratulated the organizers and participants of ICECE 2022. He said, “The energy industry needs to not only adopt new technologies, business models and reduce costs but also take the clean energy agenda to the decision-making level. Therefore, the Punjab government is fully prepared to support all relevant sectors, adopt new strategies, change the energy system, and improve the lives of the people”. Governor Punjab, Ch. Muhammad Sarwar also emphasized the importance of energy efficiency & conservation. “We as a nation, have to act, plan, anticipate the situation and change our mindset towards indigenous resources to stand on our own grounds. I believe that energy transition will extremely affect society everywhere and at many different levels”, he remarked.

Vice-Chancellor UET Lahore, Prof. Dr. Syed Mansoor Sarwar welcomed the honorable guests, invited speakers, industrial experts, public & private institutes for their participation and also appreciated Dr. Waqar Mahmood and his team for organizing a successful conference.

Collectively 100 researchers from Pakistan, Sri Lanka, India, China, Malaysia, Australia, Germany, USA, submitted their papers and only the top-quality papers were accepted by the technical evaluation committee qualifying the merit-based criteria. Speakers were invited from prominent universities of Pakistan and other countries like the United Kingdom, Serbia, Malaysia to deliver talks in the areas related to Energy Efficiency & Conservation.

Director CERAD, Prof. Dr. Waqar Mahmood shared the modules of the conference with the participants and also highlighted the history of the International Conference on Energy Conservation & Efficiency at the opening ceremony. A virtual exposition was also designed where projects from different research labs of CERAD were displayed in a 3D environment. More than 20 industries showcased their products in the exposition including Kingor Battery, JA Solar, DAS Solar, MTM Smart Solutions, Shenzhen USER Special Display Technologies, Shenzhen LEMI Technology Development Co., Ltd, Shenzhen Carst Technology Co. Conference sideways, A student-based competition was also organized by the Centre for Energy Research & Development in collaboration with National Productivity Organization Pakistan in which more than 100 students from various institutes participated. The competition contains two modules: “Productivity Poster Competition and Debate/Cleantech Idea Competition” themed Energy Conservation & Efficiency. In the competition, students showcased posters and presented their innovative ideas in the field of energy conservation & efficiency, which can be turned into productive renewable energy solutions and produce great ideas to conserve energy across the country. The Productivity Poster Competition was technically chaired by Associate Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering UET Lahore New Campus KSK, Dr. Muhammad Farooq whereas the Debate/Cleantech Idea Competition was chaired by Mr. Farhan Riaz, Program Manager, Technology Incubation & Commercialization Centre KICS UET Lahore. The prize distribution ceremony was held on the same day at the end of the competition. Mr. Sohail Ahmad Chaudhary, Deputy Secretary, Ministry of Industries and Production, Mr. Syed Musa Hassan, Deputy General Manager, National Productivity Organization, Director CERAD, Prof. Dr. Waqar Mahmood, and the jury members of both modules attended the ceremony and awarded cash prizes of up to Rs 1 Lac to the winners of both modules.

IIOE Online Video Competition – Registration Deadline is 30th January (4:00 PM)

On 12th January, the first IIOE Online Courseware Competition ended successfully. More than 210 teachers from 45 countries around the world have participated in this competition and submitted courses with quality and innovation.  

Congratulations to UET Lahore & Pakistan that 3 out of 6 winners are from Pakistan and 2 of them are from UET Lahore. In addition, all four special winners from Pakistan & UET was the most participative HEI out of all the IIOE partners and participating HEIs.

Dr. Waqar Mahmood attends UNESCO-ICHEI International Advisory Committee Meeting 2021 as an Expert of Digital Transformation in Higher Education

International Advisory Committee Meeting of UNESCO-ICHEI (International Centre for Higher Education Innovation under the auspices of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) was held at the Southern University of Science and Technology. The meeting was chaired by Professor Freddy Boey, Deputy President for Innovation & Enterprise of the National University of Singapore, and President, UNESCO-ICHEI. The conference focused on topics related to the digital transformation of higher education and systematically discussed theoretical concepts, key areas, and practical points to support global stakeholders’ collaborative efforts in this field.

Mr. CHENG Jiangang, Director of Institute of Higher Education Digital Transformation of ICHEI, Mr. HAN Xibin, Consultant of Education Technology of ICHEI, Chief Director, Professor of Institute of Education (IOE) Tsinghua University and other colleagues from ICHEI, presented special reports during the meeting.

The expert members discussed the topics “Preliminary Research on Higher Education Digital Transformation” and “Research & Practice of Systematically Promoting Reforms of Digital Teaching & Learning” and made valuable suggestions on the future development planning and implementation of ICHEI. 

“These subjects provide an in-depth consideration of all aspects of education, and the ICHEI-Tsinghua joint research project also creates an opportunity for all parties to work together to explore education’s future growth paths,” says Director KICS, Prof. Dr. Waqar Mahmood. He also suggested combining the existing work of the ICHEI-Tsinghua Joint Research Project with the ICHEI, such as using the national center as a foundation for practice and implementation, incorporating educational transformation and change research into policy development.

At the end of the meeting, Pro. Li Ming, Director ICHEI, expressed his gratitude to the experts for their input. He said that all the experts expressed constructive opinions, ICHEI had already started the work of selecting experimental universities in the Asia Pacific and Africa for the landing of the research combining with flagship projects and national centers and developing an evaluation mechanism to systematically assess the effectiveness of research results in terms of theoretical research and practical testing. The experts’ opinions will be completely integrated into the future development of ICHEI, he added.
