5th International Conference on Energy Conservation & Efficiency (ICECE) organized by CERAD UET Lahore

“The energy industry needs to not only adopt new technologies, business models and reduce costs but also take the clean energy agenda to the decision-making level,” says Federal Minister for Science & Technology, Shibli Faraz at the 5th ICECE 2022.

Centre for Energy Research & Development (CERAD), UET Lahore has been organizing its flagship event, International Conference on Energy Conservation & Efficiency (ICECE) consistently for the last four years. This year CERAD organized the 5th edition of the annual conference to provide the opportunity and platform to the researchers, engineers, and energy experts to explore & exchange ideas in the rapidly developing domain of energy efficiency and conservation strategies in collaboration with Punjab Energy Efficiency and Conservation Agency (PEECA), IEEE Power and Energy Society, IEEE Industry Application Society Lahore Chapter, and IEEE Lahore Section. Considering the COVID 19 impact, the conference took place virtually this year again.

The opening ceremony of the conference was graced by the presence of the Federal Minister for Science & Technology, Mr. Shibli Faraz as a Chief Guest. Governor Punjab, Ch. Muhammad Sarwar, Provincial Minister for Energy, Dr. Muhammad Akhtar Malik, Provincial Minister of Higher Education Department, Raja Yasir Humayun Sarfaraz, Chairman of PM Task Force on Science & Technology, Dr. Atta-ur-Rahman, and MD PEECA, Mr. Abdul Rehman were invited as distinguished guests. The federal Minister for Science & Technology congratulated the organizers and participants of ICECE 2022. He said, “The energy industry needs to not only adopt new technologies, business models and reduce costs but also take the clean energy agenda to the decision-making level. Therefore, the Punjab government is fully prepared to support all relevant sectors, adopt new strategies, change the energy system, and improve the lives of the people”. Governor Punjab, Ch. Muhammad Sarwar also emphasized the importance of energy efficiency & conservation. “We as a nation, have to act, plan, anticipate the situation and change our mindset towards indigenous resources to stand on our own grounds. I believe that energy transition will extremely affect society everywhere and at many different levels”, he remarked.

Vice-Chancellor UET Lahore, Prof. Dr. Syed Mansoor Sarwar welcomed the honorable guests, invited speakers, industrial experts, public & private institutes for their participation and also appreciated Dr. Waqar Mahmood and his team for organizing a successful conference.

Collectively 100 researchers from Pakistan, Sri Lanka, India, China, Malaysia, Australia, Germany, USA, submitted their papers and only the top-quality papers were accepted by the technical evaluation committee qualifying the merit-based criteria. Speakers were invited from prominent universities of Pakistan and other countries like the United Kingdom, Serbia, Malaysia to deliver talks in the areas related to Energy Efficiency & Conservation.

Director CERAD, Prof. Dr. Waqar Mahmood shared the modules of the conference with the participants and also highlighted the history of the International Conference on Energy Conservation & Efficiency at the opening ceremony. A virtual exposition was also designed where projects from different research labs of CERAD were displayed in a 3D environment. More than 20 industries showcased their products in the exposition including Kingor Battery, JA Solar, DAS Solar, MTM Smart Solutions, Shenzhen USER Special Display Technologies, Shenzhen LEMI Technology Development Co., Ltd, Shenzhen Carst Technology Co. Ltd, Hangzhou Everfine Photo-E-Info Co., Ltd, FnS Power Technology Inc, TRC Transportation Research & Consulting, Associated Commercial Agencies, FB Energy Limited, Power Highway, Okasha Smart, Solar Max, Crest LED, Solar Studio, Tesla Solar, SolDrive, Reon Energy Ltd, BarqBox Energies Pvt. Ltd, Fast Cables, Get Technologies. 

Conference sideways, A student-based competition was also organized by the Centre for Energy Research & Development in collaboration with National Productivity Organization Pakistan in which more than 100 students from various institutes participated. The competition contains two modules: “Productivity Poster Competition and Debate/Cleantech Idea Competition” themed Energy Conservation & Efficiency. In the competition, students showcased posters and presented their innovative ideas in the field of energy conservation & efficiency, which can be turned into productive renewable energy solutions and produce great ideas to conserve energy across the country. The Productivity Poster Competition was technically chaired by Associate Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering UET Lahore New Campus KSK, Dr. Muhammad Farooq whereas the Debate/Cleantech Idea Competition was chaired by Mr. Farhan Riaz, Program Manager, Technology Incubation & Commercialization Centre KICS UET Lahore. The prize distribution ceremony was held on the same day at the end of the competition. Mr. Sohail Ahmad Chaudhary, Deputy Secretary, Ministry of Industries and Production, Mr. Syed Musa Hassan, Deputy General Manager, National Productivity Organization, Director CERAD, Prof. Dr. Waqar Mahmood, and the jury members of both modules attended the ceremony and awarded cash prizes of up to Rs 1 Lac to the winners of both modules.

The closing ceremony of the conference took place on the second day of the conference. Director CERAD, Dr. Waqar described briefly the 2-day event. The conference ended up with the certificate distribution to the participants and organizers.
