NWN (KICS UET) and Safe City Authority (SCA) Lahore, Mutually Work for City-Wide Audio Surveillance

Al-Khawarzmi Institute of Computer Science (KICS)’s research lab NWNL (Next Generation Wireless Networks Lab) and Safe City Authority (SCA) have signed an agreement in November 2017 for providing the research-based acoustic surveillance solution at the camera sites in Lahore city. Under this agreement, our lab has committed a complete solution to SCA for providing audio surveillance enabled with the desired features for acoustic evidence collection at each camera location. Therefore, we have manufactured the IP65 compliance product (GSF-1) as per the specification criteria met Huawei Technologies. Our low powered environment-friendly product is easily integrable with the existing camera and network architecture. The complete solution based on the “hardware and the Software” will be integrated at 300 camera sites of SCA Lahore and it will be functional to monitor the incidents in real time environment of Lahore City.

The customized solution uses the triangulation with the help of acoustic sensors to identify the exact location of the source which has to be communicated as an event at the command and control center (PPCI3) managed at SCA.

Our solution will add the following functionalities into the existing surveillance system at PPCI3:
Continuous audio streaming from 300 camera sites.
Web-based monitoring and hardware configurations.

Remotely controlled surveillance with auto gain adjustment, microphone enabling/disabling and acoustic event data capturing functionality.
Human speech reorganization in the real-time noisy environment for evidence collection.
Audio data profiling for real-time event data.
Gun-shot detection and source localization.

It is the first commercial project of NWN (KICS UET). Earlier it has done numerous research projects such as multiple sensing enabled real-time intelligent wireless camera networks for secure spaces (ICT R&D Fund), cluster head selection and optimization, extending Rescue 1122 through new and emerging technologies and to name a few. The lab aims to provide commercial and non-commercial solutions in the field of computer networks, excess networks, source localization, node calibration, intelligent security, and surveillance.
