National and International Delegations Attend UET Lahore’s International Conference on Energy Conservation and Efficiency

Lahore, 23rd October 2019 – The opening ceremony of a two-day 3rd International Conference on Energy Conservation and Efficiency 2019 took place in University of Engineering and Technology Lahore on 23rd October 2019. It is a joint collaboration of Center for Energy Research and Development (CERAD) UET and Punjab Energy Efficiency and Conservation Agency (PEECA). Chief Guest of the event was Chairman Punjab Higher Education Commission Prof. Dr. Fazal Ahmad Khalid who graced the occasion along with other distinguished guests including Vice Chancellor UET Lahore Prof. Dr. Syed Mansoor Sarwar, Program Manager PEECA Mr. Abdur Rehman, Professor Dr. Bhooming Zhang from Tsinghua University, China and Prof. Dr. Li Song from Ever Fine Corporation from China. Students, faculties, researchers and people from all walks of life attended this conference.

Chairman Punjab HEC and Vice Chancellor UET Lahore along with other guests including Prof. Dr. Waqar Mahmood (Director CERAD) inaugurated the industrial exposition.

Guest of honor Chairman PHEC Prof. Dr. Fazal Ahmad Khalid appreciated the efforts of Dr. Waqar Mahmood and his team for successfully conducting the event. He described about the long role of UET in conducting energy efficiency projects with government and private institutes. Prof. Khalid told the audience that Pakistan was in the position of resolving the energy challenges. He pointed out that the important issue in the country currently was ‘energy efficiency and conservation’ and for that we as a nation had to work on together. Chairman also told how best we could do for overcoming the energy crises using various available ways? He mentioned that the cheaper sources for energy should be used to overcome the crisis. He said that CPEC and other governmental developments in energy sector were good for generating power. He emphasized on the need of turning the home appliances into energy efficient devices to save energy.

In his address to the audience, Dr. Syed Mansoor talked about the need of conserving the energy. Vice Chancellor said “Pakistan was using 4000 MW currently and if we start using efficient fans, refrigerators and all efficient appliances, we can save more than 10,000 MW of energy”. Further he revealed that Pakistan can save 10 million dollars provided that we use efficient devices everywhere in home and offices. Prof. Syed then depicted about the recent MOU signed between PEECA and UET for the retrofitting of UET’s main and KSK campuses.

Program Manager PEECA Mr. Abdur Rehman talked about CERAD’s initiative for energy conservation. Further he added about the UET’s contribution towards energy efficiency and conservation matters. He also revealed the works going on the agreement signed with UET for retrofitting of UET Lahore. NEECA (National Energy Efficiency & Conservation Authority)’s representative Mr. Asad revealed about the tools which can be used to conserve the energy. Director CERAD UET Dr. Waqar Mahmood delivered a presentation on ICECE conference and told how successfully it was held for last two years.

In the end, the chief guest presented the souvenirs to the guests. The conference will last for two days – 23rd and 24th October 2019 where the speakers from Pakistan and abroad are invited to present their papers and technical talks. 22 highest quality papers are to be presented at the conference and 28 national and international speakers from prestigious institutes and organizations have come to present their talks. The presenters are from the organizations such as GM Power Systems, NEECA, PEECA, NUST, Air Audit, Air University, USPCASE NUST, Ever Fine Corporation China, Effat University Saudi Arabia, CERAD UET, USPCASE Peshawar, BZU Multan, UOL Lahore, Erciyes University Turkey, Gwangju University Korea, Tsinghua University China, UET Lahore, UET Taxila, Comsats Lahore, FJWU Rawalpindi, UET Peshawar, LUMS, SDPI, University of Agriculture Faisalabad, FAST Lahore and PIET Multan.

The first day of the conference consisted of paper presentations and invited talks. Topics such as ‘Design and Analysis of Hybird Power Generation System for Rural Electrification’, ‘The Impact of Domestic Energy Efficiency’, ‘Low Temperature Thermal Energy Storage for Passive Cooling Using Lauryl Alcohol’, ‘Progress in the International Standards for Photoelectric Measurements of LED Lighting Products’, ‘An Event-Driven System for Li-Lion Batteries State of Health Assessment’, ‘Event-Driven Elucidation of the Power Quality Disturbances’, ‘Technco-Economic Analysis of Hybird Renewable Energy Systems for Rural Areas’, ‘Suppression of Dynamic Stall by Leading Edge Slat on a Darrieus Vertical Axis Wind Turbine’, ‘Optimization of Quai-e-Azam Solar Park’, ‘Anti-Soiling Nano Particulate Coating on PV-Modules’, ‘Performance Evaluation of Silica-Gel’, ‘Design and Development of a Hybird Solar-Wind Renewable Energy Generator Systems’, ‘Reshaping the Pakistan Generation Mix’, ‘Aligning National Determined Contribution and Energy Efficiency Initiatives’, ‘Energy Conservation in Punjab’ and ‘Savings Potential in the Fourth Utility: Compressed Air’ were presented to the audience.

Industry’s participation was also seen there, as the likes of Jolta Electric, Solar Technologies, Tesla Industries, Get Technologies, Air Audit, Americal Electronics, Royal Bio Energy, DCH Solar Giga and many others showcased their products at their stalls. The industry’s major interest was on the footfalls since they wanted to target the large market of students present in UET. They wanted to showcase their products to the students and grab the market which they succeeded by the end of the day when the day one wrapped up. Solar products were quite in focus and attracted the people out there and this was surely for the energy crisis Pakistan has been going under since a long time. The moderate pricing of the products was the main attention of the people. Industry found it a better place to exhibit their products. Nearly 20 industrial stalls were witnessed packed with the attendees of the conference to get the information.

A roundtable discussion was held at Vice Chancellor’s room where leading industries and academia took part in the discussion on ‘Energy and Environment’.
